iRobot has also included the option of rolling rollers under the Roomba which do not have bristles and are therefore more likely to withstand knots than earlier models. What sets the Roomba 980 apart from other models with a higher-end price tag however, is its inclusion of a new dirt detection feature that uses cameras to detect particles of dirt embedded. This is a significant improvement over the previous version which relied on the use of a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover to bounce around the room and clean the entire area three times at various angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. It scored highly on low-pile carpet and best Buy robot vacuum also on mid-pile. It did a fair job of removing pet hair, but it had a difficult time with very long and thick pet fur that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the top performing robots on our list despite the slight limitations. It's also not as expensive as top-of-the-line models. It's got plenty of features that we'd like to see in a top-of-the-line model however, it doesn't come with all the fancy apps or smart home integration that are found in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up in a matter of minutes and is ready for use as soon as you are ready to. After you have removed the pull tab for the battery and the yellow bin insert from the undercarriage, all that you need to connect it to its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, hit its large "Clean" button, and let it get to work. It will automatically return to docking station when it runs out of battery or is full of debris. There are also indicators on top that indicate when the bin is empty, when it requires recharging, or if it loses Wi-Fi.
